With about 123 million people (2022), Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa after Nigeria, and still the fastest growing economy in the region with 6.3% growth in FY2020/21. Like other low income countries in Africa, Ethiopia presently faces the enormous challenge of creating a more inclusive and efficient education system amid rapid population growth to an estimated 191 million people by 2050.

Despite Ethiopia’s booming economy, the country’s education system remains underdeveloped and plagued by low participation rates and quality problems a situation partially owed to Ethiopia having been deprived of economic development for decades.

Toward World-Class Status

Addis Ababa University (AAU is the oldest and the largest higher learning and research institution in Ethiopia, private higher education is the largest or second largest in sub-Saharan Africa. This large private presence exists despite Ethiopia being rather late to start private higher education and despite some stiffly restrictive regulation. Although these institutions represent the gold standard, it is the gold standard of the past.
